Art on Family Sunday

Today was family Sunday at the Mingei Museum in Balboa Park.  We have never been there, though I have wanted to go for some time now.  Its a very small international art museum.  They do family Sunday once a month.  We did a scavenger hunt, finding different pieces of art and sometimes answering questions about them.  At the end, the kids turned it in for a small prize.

The coolest part though, was a guy named Gustav who showed the kids how he takes big wine/whiskey barrels apart and turns them into chairs, tables, etc.  He took a barrel apart for all of us to see, then let each of the kids take turns helping him build a sculpture to display at the museum.  He left it totally up to the kids as far as which piece they wanted to use, and where they wanted to place it.

Gustav and my girls with the sculpture once all the kids had had a turn.  They were very proud.

Eliza showing Daddy which piece she put in (the one with the hole).

We walked around Balboa park before we left, and the girls also got to contribute to this awesome painting over by the International Cottages.
