Dom and I went to Cancun from Wednesday (actually our red-eye flight left Tuesday) through Sunday. It was an incentive trip that Dom won through work, just like Jamaica last year. We had such a fantastic time!
Our resort was great! We had a view of the pool from our room, and the walkway to the beach was really close too.
Thursday we got up early and joined a tour to visit the ruins at Tulum. It's the only Mayan ruins that are on the beach, and it was beautiful! The weather was a bit overcast, but the rain that was forecast never came.
The ancient Mayans must have been very short since this is one of the entrances to the city.
The purple salvia grew wild all around.
Our guide, Hugo, was very knowledgeable and we really enjoyed the information he shared with us. Then we got free time to explore on our own.
Overlooking the white sand beaches.
We walked all around checking out all the nooks and crannies.
The main temple. All the ruins were roped off to protect the original pigments used in the inside.
After the ruins we continued our tour by heading into the jungle for ziplining, repelling, and swimming in a cenote.
Cenote Pich
This was our favorite part of the day. It was so amazing that I can't put it into words. The underground cave system spans the Yucatan Peninsula and has been a source of water since the ancient Mayan civilization. The natural limestone serves as a filter to the rain water and it forms stalactites and stalagmites over the years. The only part added by mankind were the lights.
Moses - our tour guide for the adventure portion of the day.
Friday we stayed at the resort all day hanging out with some of Dom's co-workers and enjoying the pool.
Saturday we borrowed Diana's rental car to go see the ruins at Coba with a few other people from our group.
The first stop - The Mayan ball court. Hugo shared the story of the Mayan ball game with us on Thursday, and seeing the court here, put it into another perspective for us.
From there we hiked into the jungle a little over a mile to see the main temple - Nohoch Mul (meaning Big Mound).
The temple is 42 meters tall (about 14 stories), and is the only one in the Yucatan Peninsula that is still open for people to climb.
The 5 of us were the only ones there since we went really early before the tour groups. It was awesome! I can't imagine trying to come back down those steep steps at the same time that a bunch of other people were trying to climb up.
We made it! The view out over the jungle was amazing!
The descending god carved above the door at the top.
On the way down, we stopped to enjoy the view before heading back below the canopy.
So happy we had this experience!
We went into Playa del Carmen afterwards to grab lunch and check out the shops.
Our view during lunch... the fish tacos were delicious!
Refueled and ready to shop.
Goofing off with some of the local statues.
Dom enjoying the Blue Fish Spa - Garrarufa fish eat dead skin, and Dom had a lot to feed them on his feet. He said it tickled and tingled. When they were done, his feet were pretty soft.
It was a week before Dia de los Muertos.
Sunday I walked down to the beach at our resort to say goodbye to the Gulf.
The coati wanted to say goodbye as well.
And the iguanas just wanted to be left alone in the sun.
